Android 4.0.4 rolling out to some Galaxy phones in Europe
There is a large audience of Galaxy smart phone users who are still waiting to get Ice Cream Sandwich installed on their phones. It is being delayed and the reason for the delays is not being provided. In particular, the Galaxy S2 and the Galaxy Note are two of the very high profile phones which are still waiting for update. While the Galaxy S2 has some countries in Europe where it is rolling out, it is not everywhere. Here in the US, there is no ICS for these two very popular devices. Now comes word that Google is rolling out Android 4.0.4 to selected Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Nexus S smart phones.
There is no word on when owners of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus might be seeing the latest version of ICS being provided for their smart phones. The current roll out of Android 4.0.4 is for selected phones and in general is not going to apply in the US. What that means is that for Sprint owners of the Nexus S and Verizon owners of the Galaxy Nexus, you are on hold. The only information is that it will be provided in the “coming weeks” for those in the US. For those in other locations, the news is a little better.
They are providing the vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich update of Android 4.0.4 to GSM versions of the Nexus S and the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus devices. For those of you who purchased one of the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus smart phone and are operating it on AT&T’s wireless network, you may be in luck to get this update. For these phones, the news is great and means that they will be getting a number of bug fixes and enhancements. For those on Sprint and Verizon, you are having to wait, which is not good.
For those other Galaxy smart phone owners who have been waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich, this is looking very bad for you. Samsung has not provided Android 4.0 to either the Galaxy S2 or the Galaxy Note and here is Google doing an update to version 4.0.4. That is going to mean a further delay to getting ICS on your phone as Samsung will need to take this latest version and apply all their code changes to it before providing it. Since we have no idea as to when Samsung might have been doing that before the announcement by Google for Android 4.0.4, everyone is in limbo having no idea as to when it might arrive.
Don’t you think that it is time for Samsung to finally come out and provide details as to why ICS continues to be delayed?
