In the ongoing battles between Apple and Samsung, Apple is suing Samsung in the US for infringement on 4 patents. As being reported by Foss Patents, Apple is going after the OS side of the Galaxy Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) which we can assume is the real target here. Apple’s lawsuit is an attempt to ban the sales of the Galaxy Nexus in the US because of the patent infringements. This is part of the ongoing efforts by Apple to block the sale of Samsung Galaxy devices around the globe.
From the Foss Patents, the items being infringed on are:
- the “data tapping” patent based on which the ITC ordered an import ban against HTC
- a patent related to Siri and unified search, which must be of huge concern to Google with a view to its core business
- a new slide-to-unlock patent that even had the head of the Taiwanese government profoundly worried
- a word completion patent that provides major speed improvements for touchscreen text entry
Of the 4 patents, 3 of them were issued last year and are recently issued to Apple which would mean that Google was well underway in the development of Android 4.0 at the time so the filing by Apple appears to be an attempt to suppress ICM. This latest filing is in the same District Court in Northern California where Apple has a lawsuit underway against Samsung which is not going as well for Apple as they would like. With an uncertain outcome for Apple, this may be another attempt on their part to get a court decision against Samsung which will impede the sales of the Galaxy product line.
With Samsung rising to the top for worldwide sales with Apple, the competition between these two companies is intensifying. The recent Samsung’d ads are a direct attack against Apple. And yet, Samsung and Apple have other business relationships where Samsung supplies parts for Apple products which seems to muddy the water as to exactly what Apple’s intentions are here. The best guess is that Apple wants to remain on the top of the pile and anyone who is rivaling them at that level is a threat and must be put down through the courts.
There are other cases going on in other countries between Apple and Samsung which continue the legal battles between the two. It appears that Apple has not been doing as well recently and another court loss may cause them to rethink what they are going. We can hope.
