With the growing size of smart phones and more tablets entering the market, the idea of reducing the weight of those devices is becoming more important. Carrying my smart phone has always added to the weight in my pocket because of the technology advances, but the increasing screen size has increased the weight because of the glass touch screens. We are now starting to see a lot more talk about flexible screens coming next year. And it may well be that 2013 is the year for wide spread usage of flexible screens in smart phones. And with that, a reduction in the weight of smart phones.
Much of the renewed speculation is the result of a Wall Street Journal where they had an interview talking about the future for flexible screens for smart phones and the plans for mass production in the first half of 2013. That would mean wide spread usage by the end of 2013. And with that, we would see an immediate reduction in the weight of smart phones. And when applied to tablets, the weight reduction would be even more. And imagine the reduction is the size of your tablet when carrying it because you can roll up the flexible screen when not in use.
There have been demonstrations showing off flexible screens for smart phones by Samsung in the past, but the renewed interested over the past few months tends to indicate that we may be on the verge of seeing them going mainstream next year.
The Consumer Electronics Show(CES) is less than a month away and it is expected there will be more displays of flexible screens at that time. Since Samsung has been the big company showing off what they have been doing for the past few years, we expect them to again show off where they are at in the process. If 2013 is the year where flexible screens will go mainstream, then there will be much larger interest in flexible screens being displayed.
Watch for the announcements from CES in January.
