There has been the drive to invent and deliver the next big thing for the market and for mobile devices, it has been the idea of thinner screens which in turn results in thinner phones. We have seen phones become thinner even though they have been getting more put inside of them, including batteries and cameras which take up space. Towards the goal of making phones thinner, the idea of flexible screens is seen as a way to significantly reducing size and weight for smart phones. Having a curved screen, such as the Galaxy Nexus, would not have been seen just a few short years ago and yet today it is starting to look like it will be common place this year. What the future holds for technology this year is starting to show up this quarter and is a glimpse into what we can expect to see later this year.
In this picture from Forbes, you can clearly see what the future is going to hold for the flexible AMOLED technology which allows them to be shaped in ways that few believed were possible 5 years ago. And now it looks like they are going to arrive this year. Last year there was talk about Samsung moving their testing of flexible screens out of Beta and into production in 2012. That is going to require them to complete construction of a brand new fabrication plant and hopefully start production no later than the middle of this year. If they can complete that, we can expect to see the first mobile devices arriving by the 4th quarter and if things go extremely well, some could show up in the 3rd quarter.
If these do begin to arrive in the 4th quarter on mobile devices, it is not going to be long after that before we start to see the same technology being used in TV’s and billboards in the mall. All of this being lighter and cheaper to produce is going to take technology to a whole other level as things change from what we are use to today. A year from now, everything will be much lighter and thinner from your smart phone to your TV and that will be something to look forward to seeing.
All of this seems a little futuristic for technology, but the reality is that it is coming. Samsung has put together a YouTube video showing just what the future may be holding for us in a few years and with the recent technology improvements, there is no reason that we are not going to see fantastic improvements starting in 2013 in most of the devices we use today.
