Samsung is putting the Galaxy Note 5.3 on sale in the US starting tomorrow with AT&T as the wireless carrier for the device. Pre-orders have been going on since February 5th and many of those have already been shipped to people before everyone else can see one. With this device which cannot make up its mind what it is, Samsung has created a category called phablet which is it pushing to describe the Galaxy Note. It is both a smart phone and a tablet rolled up into a single device. While this is something which can be considered new, it does cause one to wonder what is coming next in terms of smart phone sizes. Over the past year, smart phone screens have been growing in size such as the Galaxy Nexus with its 4.65 inch screen which would appear to make the Galaxy Note only a little larger. Then you take a look at the iPhone 3.5 inch screen and now the Note is significantly larger.
While creating a new category of phablet, it makes one wonder whether we are going to again see a combining of devices. The combination of a music player and a smart phone was one which previously required two separate devices, but slowly has become an accepted combination. We are starting to see the same thing with the Galaxy Note where the combining of a smart phone and a tablet is making its moves to change the marketplace. Once a smart phone screen size crosses the 5 inch barrier, it is now in the realm of being looked at as a tablet. These are really mini-tablets at this size with 7 inch tablets being seen as the smallest size to be in the tablet category.
With mini-tablets starting to become part of the popular market, it is all going to depend on the popularity of the Galaxy Note 5.3 inch tablet to determine whether this new market segment is going to make it or not. Based on all that is being reviewed, the jury is out in the US as to whether the Galaxy Note 5.3 is going to be successful as a phablet or not. Some reviewers are indicating that the phone is not quite as good as it could be and other are saying that the tablet is too small. As with anything which is breaking into a new category, we can expect some of these kinds of comments. If this becomes an accepted category by consumers, things are only going to improve making the phone portion better and the tablet portion better. We expect to see the Galaxy Note 5.3 being very successtul.
