The Samsung Galaxy Note has been rumored to be announced this week at CES in Las Vegas and while there has been no actual announcement from Samsung or AT&T, it is coming. It no longer matters as there are banners hanging at CES as shown here from SlashGear for the combination smart phone and tablet. You can clearly see the AT&T logo on the banner and that is the confirmation for this coming to the US. The only thing left is to now have the formal presentation as part of a press event during CES.It was yesterday that we were talking about the leak of information by AnyMode as a press release about the accessories they are providing and the subsequent retraction. It is too late and along with leaked pictures, everyone has been expecting the announcement to be made at CES. Now with the banners showing at the entrance to CES and other posters and banners in the halls, this is no longer an unknown. We now know that the Galaxy Note is coming to AT&T. The next big question is whether the phone will contain an LTE modem so that it can take advantage of the AT&T 4G LTE network that they are slowly rolling out around the US.
With the LTE issue still to be announced, there is still the question of whether this will come with Android 2.3 or Android 4.0. Since January is slated to be the month for Ice Cream Sandwich to be roller out to other devices, when will it show up on other devices. With that in mind, we expect to see the Galaxy Note arrive with ICS already installed and be demonstrated this week with Android 4.0 as well.
Given that Samsung is calling this a new category, the combination of a phone and a tablet has been successful in Asia and Europe. The question remains as to how well this phablet is going to do in the US. If looks to be far better than the Dell Streak which was phased out last year. We should know within a few months whether this is going to be a successful item in the market. Smart phones have been growing in size, such as the 4.65 inch Galaxy Nexus. There are some other phones getting closer to the 5.0 inch screen size and is becoming more acceptable. We could even see some at CES making the 5.3 Galaxy Note more acceptable.
It will not take long to hear how people feel about this new category of phone and tablet.
