Partnership will benefit consumers with free storage.
The announcement of the Galaxy S3 last week is still unfolding as we try and find dates for the release of the phone in the US. While it is coming to North America some time this summer, we are at a point where there has been no release of information. Which carriers here are going to be selling the Galaxy S3 and when that might be happening is important. That will be a topic of conversation for a while until we get the specific information. In the mean time, there is one feature which we think is a great deal for the coming Galaxy S3. That is the 50 GB of Dropbox storage for free for a period of 2 years. This is something which will be beneficial for moving items between your phone and other devices.
With the 8 MP camera, this will be a great way to move pictures between your phone where you take them and your tablet or computer. You no longer have to carry around a USB stick, but rather just have a Dropbox account to move things around. Given that the free Dropbox account only comes with 2 GB of storage, this is a great deal. It will save you the $99 annual fee which they charge. Of course, at the end of the 2 years, you will have to decide whether to pay for the additional storage or not. Who knows, the Dropbox partnership might be included with future Galaxy phones as well.
And that is exactly what has happened. Samsung and Dropbox have signed a deal to provide for the Dropbox app to come pre-loaded on smart phones and tablets in the future. This is great news. While the Samsung relationship is not exclusive with Dropbox, it is an indication of a change in the marketplace and the value that Dropbox brings. There is no specific information in the deal as to exactly how much additional free space Dropbox will be providing on Samsung devices beyond the 2 GB. We will have to wait on that information. You can expect that it will be well above 10 GB as Dropbox is now having to compete with Google and their Google Drive. With the competition, consumers will be the winners.
Exactly when those of us in North America will be getting the Galaxy S3 is an unknown and a strange one at that. Samsung needs to provide details or they risk those waiting for the Galaxy S3 an option to purchase another phone. Such as the rumored iPhone which could show up in June. Samsung needs to get it together.
