S Voice App for ICS rooted to provide for other Android phones
The coming S Voice from Samsung is shaping up to be a stiff competitor to Apple’s Siri. There has been much interest in Communication Assistants on smart phones even before Siri was released last fall. Since then, Siri has received a lot of press about how it can make a difference in your daily activities. We knew that it would not be long before others came up with competing products and S Voice is that competing product. With S Voice from Samsung, the competition is here and it is sought after by many. It is not even on the market yet, but some have been able to get it off the ROM and make it available to others. But that availability will not last.
The rooting of the ICS ROM makes S Voice available to other Samsung phones which can support the feature and is being talked about on forums. That rooting has been discussed by xda developers with included instruction for installing. But, Samsung cannot let S Voice be taken and spread throughout their phones without being able to control it. So, the much talked about availability of S Voice has now been silenced. To be specific, they have started checking for authorized devices and if yours is not one, you receive back “Network Error. Please Try Again.” The only authorized device right now is the Galaxy S3.
It seems that Samsung does not want to see S Voice spread throughout the globe and are having Vlingo, who handles S Voice requests, begin checking the devices who are making the requests. If yours is not one of the supported devices (Galaxy S3) as defined by Samsung, you will get the network error message. For the moment, Samsung is blocking access to S Voice, though we expect that situation to change farly soon.
It is not going to take very long for someone to come up with the necessary information to transmit to Vlingo indicating that the phone is the Galaxy S3. For those who have rooted the S Voice, this should be a fairly sinple process to spoof the information being sent so that it will allow for the use of S Voice on non-Galaxy S3 devices. For those who want to get S Voice on their phones, it may not be long before you can get it.
