Claims of patent infringement on Siri with S Voice
With all the reported successes of the Galaxy S3 in Europe and all the talk about pre-orders here in the US, Apple is seeking to try and block the sales here in the US. With a launch date of June 21st for some of the US wireless carriers, this news comes at a terrible time and threatens to impact pre-order sales. Apple and Samsung have been engaged in legal battles all over the world this year and there is one here in Northern California going on right now.
All of this is being reported by the highly respected Foss Patent and is very serious for Samsung. The most recent action is a motion which they filed as part of a bigger case involving the Galaxy Nexus which is going on right now. Apple has taken exception to the use of S Voice as a competitor to Siri and is a violation of Apple patents. Apple is attempting to include this new motion to stop the sales of the Galaxy S3 in the United States. They also want Samsung to not sell the Galaxy S3 until the court rules on the motion. The complete legal document can be found at Foss Patents link above.
Apple asked Samsung to “confirm that it will not launch the Galaxy S III in the United States until the Court has ruled on Apple’s preliminary injunction motion”,
Apple got Samsung to agree to not sell the Galaxy Tab in Australia until the court make their decision on the preliminary injunction, but it is extremely unlikely Samsung will agree to do the same for the Galaxy S3. At this point, Samsung is working to have Apple file a new motion rather than add it to the existing court case which will delay the whole process. This one will be watched rather closely for the next week to see if Apple can prevail in the current court to let them add the motion to the case regarding the Galaxy Nexus. If Apple is able to get a preliminary injunction against the Galaxy S3 in the US, it will be huge.
