The Galaxy S3 when it was released was a great smartphone. And the subsequent sales for it proved just how great it is. And with the release of the Galaxy S4, Samsung has another great product to entice people to purchase. It has added features to make it the new flagship phone for them. And Samsung will be doing the official announcement for the smaller version of the S4 in the Galaxy S4 Mini. And while you would like to have the Mini contain all of the exact same features as the popular Galaxy S4, you are going to be a little disappointed with it.
We went out to PhoneArena.com to look at the differences between the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S4 Mini. Some things were not that surprising. But some differences were far more than one would expect making the Galaxy S4 Mini more of a budget smartphone. Here are a few of the differences we have seen between the two models.
Smaller Screen – We expected to see a smaller screen, so the reduction from 5 inches to 4.3 inches is not surprising. But, the resolution differences seem to be rather extreme. From 1080 by 1920 down to 540 by 960 seem to be too much. A 50% reduction is just too much for a member of the Galaxy S4 family.
Battery – The Mini has a 1900 mAh and the S4 has 2600 mAh. There is no surprise with the reduction in size. And at 1900 mAh for the Mini, you should have no issues. The Galaxy S3 came with a 2100 mAh battery as a point of comparison.
System Memory – The S4 Mini comes with 1536 MB of memory and the S4 comes with 2048 MB. The reduction is not that much and is probably not going to make a big difference in the smaller phone. Built in storage for the S4 of 16 GB while the Mini has 8 GB. The Mini only allocates 5 GB for use by the user. Both allow for the adding of additional memory via an add on card.
Camera – Here is another example of what is just too much of a difference. The Galaxy S4 comes with a 13 megapixel camera while the Galaxy S4 Mini comes with an 8 megapixel camera. This difference is a little too much and really should be a 10 megapixel camera.
Processor – The processor differences really show the S4 Mini as being more in the budget category. With a Dual Core 1700 MHz, the Galaxy S4 Mini comes in lower than we would expect to see. The Galaxy S4 comes with a Quad Core 1900 MHz processor.
Samsung could have kept the quality of the product far higher for the Galaxy S4 Mini, but in a number of areas has chosen to provide items which cost far less which moves this from being a high quality smart phone down into the budget category.
