Patent filing hints to future dual screen tablet.
Samsung has been braking the mold on products lately, such as the Galaxy Note 5.3 which seemed to be a cross between a smart phone and a tablet. It is a category they have labeled as a “phablet” and looks to be successful for them. They are more than willing to venture into new areas and take risks. A recent filing with the US Patent And Trademark Office shows Samsung making a filing for a dual screen tablet which has a clam shell associated with it. The filing is D658173 and was filed on April 7th and approval on April 24th. This was filed by Samsung Electronics Company by the inventor Kim. This is interesting to see and unknown as to just how long it will be before we might see a clam shell tablet from Samsung in the form of a Galaxy Tab.
All of this comes after Sony launched its Tablet P which had the obvious intention of involving their gaming slant to the product. The filing shows the device as being a 7 inch tablet that has an included remote control unit associated with it. Exactly how the remote control unit might fit in has been speculated to be for business purposes which makes sense. What is being speculated for this dual screen clam shell tablet is how two 7 inch screens might fit into the product line.
As some have indicated, one half could be used as a virtual keyboard and the other being the touch screen. But if that is true, it is nothing more than a laptop at that point, so there must be something more than just that. Some speculation is this will be a business tool and might lend credence to that where you could have each screen showing something different. Take for instance a network engineer who is working on problems. One screen could be a real time display and the other screen could be for updating information for configuration.
At this point, we do not know if this will ever make it to market. If it does, it does not look like it will be a big selling tablet.
