Samsung offering up “premium suite” for delay
Since the Galaxy Nexus came out in the middle of December with Ice Cream Sandwich at Verizon, there was an expectation that Android 4.0 would start to roll out to all of the other Android smart phones which could support it within 30 to 60 days. At least that was the general belief which a majority of people held along with new Android mobile devices coming with ICS on launch day. That has not been the case and a typical example is that of the Galaxy Note 5.3, which rolled out on AT&T’s network on February 19th, but did not come with Android 4.0. That is 2 months AFTER ICS was launched by Google on the Nexus. Now comes word that the arrival of Android 4.0 for the Galaxy Note has been delayed until Q2. That is as specific as they are getting.
This is a disappointing situation due to all the heavy advertising and promotion which Samsung is doing for the Galaxy Note. It could really benefit from having Ice Cream Sandwich running this unique phone and tablet combination which Samsung has labeled as a “phablet”. This is in spite of an official list from Samsung where they indicated a Q1 arrival of Android 4.0 for the Galaxy Note. Now, Samsung is having to reveal that they are not going to be meeting that time frame.
In the official information regarding the Premium Suite, Samsung is not offering any reason for the delay and that will only lead to speculation. The premium suite is meant to be a distraction to the fact that the Galaxy Note will not get ICS as originally promised. Android 4.0 is in the process of being rolled out for Galaxy S2 phones at over 90 days since ICS first came out. It seems that few devices have received the upgrade and even fewer launched devices have it included when released. This is a troubling situation which needs to be resolved as there is talk of the next OS version, Jelly Bean. Android Fragmentation is being highlighted even more because of this. What do you think?
Here is a video from Samsung as a teaser showing the features of the “premium suite” which they are including. It would seem this is like a bribe because they are delaying the arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich.
