Ice Cream Sandwich For Galaxy S II Announced By Samsung
This is the news that many have been waiting for a long time now. It may be only 3 months since the Galaxy Nexus arrived with Ice Cream Sandwich, but it seems like it has been ages till now when the Galaxy S2 can get Android 4.0 installed. Samsung has posted a press release for this along with Tweeting about it from the Samsung Mobile Twitter account. This news makes it official and now the wait is on for it to roll out. How long it is going to take to arrive here in the US is an unknown. Here is the statement from Samsung:
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., the global leader in Android™ smartphones, today announced the availability of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) software upgrade for GALAXY S II. The upgrade will begin in the European countries including Poland, Hungary, and Sweden, as well as Korea today and gradually roll out to other markets. Android 4.0 ICS software upgrade for GALAXY Note, GALAXY SII LTE, GALAXY R, GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus, 7.7, 8.9, 8.9 LTE and 10.1 will follow soon.
The concern is the “gradually roll out to other markets” which does not provide an indication as to when we can expect it to reach our shores. It was yesterday when we were talking about the growing number of indications and rumors pointing to a release coming very soon. Soon is now and for those folks in the listed countries, they will have the opportunity to grab the latest version and install it.
Given that the US is a huge market for Samsung, we can hope that the delay is only a matter of weeks before we start hearing about it arriving on our shores. Until that time, we have to wait until Samsung gets around to rolling out Ice Cream Sandwich to the US.
