Apple now has patents to graphical interface for smart phones.
Word is coming out regarding patents which Apple has secured from the United States Patent Office. Patent number 8223134 has been granted on July 17, 2012 to Apple Inc. and with this grant, Apple now has all the tools to go after all their competitors. As the pictures from the granted patent are showing, Apple now has the patent to the graphical interface to touch screen smart phones. This was filed as “Portable electronic device, method, and graphical user interface for displaying electronic lists and documents” and as the name implies is far reaching. This is giving Apple a whole new arsenal in which to go after the competition.
This latest Apple patent filing was done on March 5, 2012 and in what appears to be record time at the US Patent Office, was approved on July 17th. And with that approval, Apple now has consolidated patents filed back as far as 2007 and pulled them together to now give them the Intellectual Property rights to the graphical interface we are all so familiar with on our smart phones. The picture her to the upper right resembles the vast majority of screens where you might review your text messages as shown by the title at the top of the picture. It could just as well represent your incoming mail. And that resemblance is going create major problems for Android to start. Along with all the other smart phone manufacturers.
The picture here looks very similar in how organized your contact manager looks on your smart phone. And it is that general look and feel being represented by the approved patent filing which is going to cause major problems. Apple has chosen to go directly after Android phone manufacturers up to this point and the numerous lawsuits against Samsung are evidence of those activities. Now, Apple has what the need to go directly to the source of the Android OS and press them to either pay for the privilege of using the patent or stop using it.
We expect to see several test cases on this newest patent sometime before the end of year. And Samsung is the company we expect to see named in a patent infringement case here in the US for the graphical user interface. This is going to determine the future of who owns graphical interfaces on smart phones and could have a major impact on the future of smart phones and costs. Current, the Google Android OS costs do not impact the phones, but that could quickly change with this patent.
This is going to be a significant shift for the future and you should take to time to read the approved patent.
