Samsung slip up shows unpack phone to be Galaxy S3.
The tease video from Samsung about the May 3rd event in London was designed to create excitement for coming products, but there was nothing definitive as to what those coming products might actually be. There has been much speculation of the coming Galaxy S3, but the current information regarding the Next Galaxy seemed to indicate that Samsung might be naming the phone as something different. The teaser video showed nothing substantial as to what we might expect to see at the event in London. But that has now changed with a slip up by Samsung where they have accidentally let it slip for the Galaxy S3 in the “Unpacked Mobile 2012 app” from them.
All of this information is being revealed by BGR.com today and it is interesting. What they are showing is the description for the app which you can get from the new Google Play. Since they have reported this, the description information has been changed from “samsung mobile unpacked galaxy s3 unpack” to “samsung mobile unpack galaxy unpack”. The damage has already been done and you can see how it currently is being displayed on Google Play. It is out there for all to see, so they cannot take it back.
There has been speculation where Samsung might change the name for the successor to the popular Galaxy S II to some other name. With this leak, we are fairly confident of the Galaxy S3 name. It is interesting as the previous phone was the Galaxy S II using Roman Numerals and they have moved away from that to using a number value. It does make more sense to use numbers rather than the previous method. Here in the US, Samsung has allowed the various wireless carriers to make changes to the name to attempt to create uniqueness to the carrier. It is not known whether they will continue to allow them to continue with that given the huge popularity of the Galaxy S II. As for which carriers will be getting the Galaxy S3 when it launches, it does appear that GSM providers will be receiving it first, so Verizon and Sprint will have to follow on later.
A few weeks from now, we will have the official information on the Galaxy S3.
