Is Samsung moving away from the Android OS?
Microsoft has been making a lot of noise about their coming Windows 8 OS. Along with that, they look like they are going to be spending a lot of money to promote their Surface tablet. We know that other tablet makers may consider jumping on board with the Windows 8 OS, but it comes as a surprise that Samsung is making a good size commitment to Microsoft and their Windows 8 OS. And they are doing it with some new product offerings to promote their tablets along with Windows 8. And part of the product offerings are their hybrid tablets.
These hybrid tablets are part of their Smart PC products which were unveiled today. And these Smart PC tablets will be running Windows 8 and not Google’s Jelly Bean. And that is a significant change from the direction which Samsung has taken over the past few years. They have been a very big supporter for Android. In fact, their Galaxy S3 has really shown that the Android OS can provide the necessary features to be a direct competitor against the iPhone. With their splitting of their allegiance between Windows 8 and Android, it makes one wonder what else they may be considering.
We know that Samsung is going to be offering smart phones running the Windows Phone OS. It seems that Samsung may be embracing a strategy which moves them away from Google’s popular OS. And more than likely that may be due to the continuing lawsuits involving Apple and Samsung. The impact to the bottom line in court costs has to be substantial. You add to that all the bans which have been put in place at various times and it adds up to lost sales. Not something that Samsung wants to see.
Over the next year, it would appear that Samsung is going to be embracing Microsoft far more than Google. It will be interesting to see what the end result is on the sales of each OS and the associated devices.
