Samsung has seen great success with its Galaxy S4 smartphone. And with success, you sometimes make variations of your successful product to add to your market share. But Samsung has chosen to add another 4 Galaxy S4 models to the mix which may lead to some product confusion for some. And this is not about different memory configurations for the Galaxy S4. Some of the models are obviously something different which may cause some confusion. Take the Galaxy S4 Zoom which obviously looks more like a camera than a smartphone. While having choices may be a good thing, for some it does have a tendency to create some confusion as to what they are going to choose.
I have seen some calling this a Galaxy of Choice and that may be, but the differences between each of the 5 models seems to be distinct enough so that you can distinguish between each of them. And we are only talking about those mobile devices which support LTE which does narrow things down to the 5 different models here. Some of these may interest you and others may not, but it is an interesting story to follow given the variety of Galaxy S4 mobile devices.
Galaxy S4 – This is the one that we are all familiar with. It is the one with the 5 inch screen, 1.9 GHz quad core processor, 13 megapixel camera and all the other wonderful things that we are familiar with. It is running Samsung’s flavor of the Android OS along with whatever your wireless carrier has chosen to add to it.
Google Edition Galaxy S4 – This one has all the same basics as the S4, but with some changes here and there. This is really the exact same hardware as the Galaxy S4 we all know. One difference of note is the Android OS. This is a vanilla or true to the cause version of the OS. This is not available at your wireless carrier, but from Google Play for a price of $649. This gives you an unlocked phone and one that is not tied to a long contract.
Galaxy S4 Active – The Active has a 5 inch screen, but only an 8 megapixel camera included with it. The other features are basically the same as the Galaxy S4. And it is supposed to be water proof and dust proof, but with the same cheap plastic back as the Galaxy S4, that is probably not going to take too much abuse before it has problems. So, as long as it is sealed, you can use it to take underwater pictures. Another version of the S4 which may appeal to a select group of people.
Galaxy S4 Mini – The Mini screen size is reduced to the S3 screen size of 4.3 inches and an 8 megapixel camera. It also comes with the 1.7 GHz dual core processor. Since the screen size is smaller, you may feel like the Mini is a little easier to hold. In my opinion, this looks exactly like the Galaxy S3, so keep that in mind.
Galaxy S4 Zoom – The S4 Zoom is where things really depart from the other 4. It looks more like a digital camera than it does a smartphone. And with that, the camera is a 16 megapixel camera and a 1.5 GHz dual core processor. We all know that smartphones are getting much better at taking pictures, so why not combine a smartphone and digital camera. Not sure just how well this one will do and there are differing views on the quality that you get from the Galaxy S4 Zoom.
Samsung has moved to offering a number of different S4 versions and we can expect them to continue with this. With rumors of the Galaxy S5 growing, it may not be that long before we find out whether they continue to provide different models to appeal to different consumers.
