After stinging loss, Samsung prepares for another battle with Apple.
The roll out of 4G LTE here in the US continues, but the Apple iPhone has yet to arrive with LTE chips included. And it is that delay which may well cost Apple a lot. This is especially true in light of Apple’s win last week over Samsung. And Samsung seems to be itching for a fight after losing so big to Apple. So much so that Samsung is already doing saber rattling to warn Apple and everyone else of their plans to sue Apple over the use of Samsung’s patents. And this one could get ugly for Apple.
Stories are showing up talking about how Samsung will sue Apple immediately when the iPhone is released with LTE technology. And with the patents that they hold around the world, they are sure to win a number of the cases. They will also attempt to ban the sale of the next iPhone. This war between the two companies has been going on all over the world and it looks like it is going to escalate a lot more. Samsung needs to save face after the loss in Northern California last week. And one way to do that is attack Apple at the time of a product release.
While there are a number of companies which hold LTE patents, Samsung only holds 8 of the LTE patents. There are a number of other companies holding LTE patents as well, so their case may not be as strong as they would like it to be. But they are going to move forward with the filing of lawsuits to protect the company, much in the way that Apple has being doing to protect their company.
Samsung also announced a new Samsung Windows Phone 8 handset this week. They are definitely diversifying their product line to go beyond the Android OS which has seen a lot of attacks from Apple in particular. By including Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 OS, they are opening up potential new markets for themselves and lessening the risk of Apple going after them. It is an interesting strategy for Samsung.
Do you believe that Samsung will sue Apple when the iPhone is launched?
