What did you do while Twitter was down?
This morning started off well enough as everything seemed to be normal. I was able to go through my Twitter feeds so see what was going on in the tech world and another feed for personal things. All this was going along fine and then suddenly things went horrible wrong. My TweetDeck feed when blank. Nothing was coming through which for the most part made my day much worse. And it was only for the fact that Twitter stopped functioning for a period of 30 minutes. And it did not help that when I went to the site, it did not come back. And after continuing to try, it came back with the above. That did not help my falling feelings of helplessness.
So, how well did I coop. Not very well for that 30 minute period. I wasted a lot of time just trying to find out whether it was my connection to the Internet was at fault. Then I started checking around to see if anyone was reporting news of the Twitter outage. I finally saw that TechCrunch was reporting the Twitter outage. That did not help my inability to coop with the darkness in the TweetDeck feed. And I am positive that large volumes of people were doing pretty much the exact same thing during the 30+ minutes that Twitter was dark.
It seems that some have estimated the cost to the economy during the time Twitter was down to be over $1 billion. Much of that is due to lost productivity because people are trying to figure out what is going on. If you are a business owner, you are losing money from not driving people to your business or products. If you are not a business owner, you are busy trying to figure out what is going on with Twitter. That involves searching around for other resources to figure out exactly what happened.
Most people cooped with the outage by scrambling around trying to figure out what was going on. We all wanted to get some idea as to how long the outage was going to last. For me, Twitter is back and working. Whether Twitter is back for everyone is an unknown right now. It does appear that other parts of the world still may be coming back online, but are still struggling. They are still having to coop with the problems.
And it is not just Twitter that has suffered an outage today. Google Voice has suffered the same condition and as I write this, they are still down for the count right now. So it is not just Twitter users who are having problems cooping with a service outage. I guess today is one of those days to test your patience.
