Being the largest wireless carrier in the US appears to not be a factor in launching the Galaxy S3.
Verizon has been the leading wireless carrier in the US and that does not look like it will be changing anytime soon. So, that leads us to wonder whether Verizon will be one of the wireless carriers around the world to have the Galaxy S3 when it is released. This would put them on the front lines in selling a widely anticipated phone to the mobile public. Rumors for Verizon having a version to sell from Samsung that is not months after the release are showing up and creating some confusion. As with any rumors, they are from unnamed sources and verification of that information from a known source does not happen.
It seems that rumors are split on Verizon getting the Galaxy S3. Some are indicating Verizon will be selling the Galaxy S3 this summer, but we are expecting Samsung to be selling the smart phone in late May so that they are on the street and being used long before the Olympics. The Galaxy S3 has been rumored to be the official Olympic phone and if true would need to be in the market. Since the released information has Verizon selling it in the summer/fall time frame, they may well miss the launch.
Verizon has not seen the Galaxy S II in their inventory and rumor has it they passed on it so they could have an exclusive deal with the Galaxy Nexus. For Verizon, the Galaxy Nexus has been a very popular phone and was a good decision for them to get the exclusive deal. Too bad they were not also selling the Galaxy S II as it would have resulted in tremendous sales for them. this time around, a failure to sell the Galaxy S3 or get it in a timely manner may have a big impact on Verizon as people leave to go to carriers who are selling the Galaxy S3.
Part of the problem for Verizon is their CDMA wireless network. The vast majority of carriers are running a form of GSM which makes it much easier for Samsung to manufacture phones. Included in the CDMA issue is Verizon’s 4G LTE network which is still rolling out in the US, making the reliance on CDMA very important for at least another year. Given the biggest common denominator of GSM, we assume they will focus there. Whether Verizon will get special treatment and receive the Galaxy S3 at launch is an unknown and pure speculation at this time.
We will be having the official announcement from Samsung this week and hopefully all of the unknowns will be answered. One we hope to hear is that Verizon will be selling the Galaxy S3 at launch.
